    Holographic Printing FAQs

    What is holographic printing?

Holographic printing puts full-color artwork onto a metallic holographic stock instead of plain paper. The stock carries a microscopic embossed pattern that splits reflected light, so the sheet shifts color as the viewer moves past it.

    Our posters print single sided in full color — on 11 pt holographic stock at 11″ × 17″ and 12″ × 18″, and on holographic stock at 18″ × 24″, 24″ × 36″ and 27″ × 40″.

What sizes do custom holographic posters come in?

    Five sizes: 11″ × 17″, 12″ × 18″, 18″ × 24″, 24″ × 36″ and 27″ × 40″.

The two smaller sizes run on 11 pt holographic stock, 10 pt gloss house stock or 100 lb gloss book. The three larger sizes run on holographic or satin stock.

Why is white ink printed underneath the artwork?

Holographic stock is metallic, so ink laid straight onto it picks up the silver beneath and colors go dull and semi-transparent. Printing a white underbase first gives those areas a solid ground, and the color prints on top of it.

Areas deliberately left free of white ink let the holographic effect show through the artwork — that contrast between solid color and open shimmer is what the material is for. White ink is available as an add-on.

What is the difference between holographic stock and foil stamping?

Holographic stock is the material the whole poster prints on, so the iridescence covers the full sheet. Foil stamping presses metallic foil onto selected areas after printing — a logo, a headline, a border.

How much do custom holographic posters cost?

Holographic posters are as low as $3.75 each, depending on order quantity. The price moves with size, stock choice, quantity and any add-ons such as spot gloss or foil stamping.

What is the minimum order for holographic posters?

    25 posters.

How long does it take to print holographic posters?

    5–7 business days for 11″ × 17″ and 12″ × 18″.

    7+ business days for 18″ × 24″, 24″ × 36″ and 27″ × 40″, since the larger sizes run on different presses and stock.

Are holographic posters printed on both sides?

No — single sided, full color. The reverse is left unprinted.

What finishes and add-ons can I put on a holographic poster?

Spot gloss, UV ink, white ink, foil stamping and variable data.

Spot gloss and foil stamping both work with the holographic surface rather than against it, since each one adds a second kind of reflection to a sheet that is already reflective.

    What is variable data printing?

Variable data changes chosen elements from one printed piece to the next inside a single run — sequential numbering, individual names, unique codes — without stopping the press.

On posters it is most often used to number a limited run, so a tour or festival poster can be sold as 1 of 250 through to 250 of 250.

How should artwork be supplied for holographic printing?

Files should be set at CMYK color space and 300dpi resolution with .25″ bleed. White ink needs to be on a separate layer in your art file. Vector files (Illustrator) are preferred.

Can I get holographic printing on event credentials as well as posters?

Yes. The same holographic material runs across our credential range — holographic event laminates for backstage and VIP passes, holographic wristbands for gate entry, and holographic Tyvek wristbands for single-day admission.
